The Gambia government on Monday announced the suspension of the criminal case against Penny Appeal, its employees and other individuals.

The suspension is due to the emergence of new evidence according to a statement by the Attorney General’s Chambers and Ministry of Justice.

“The Attorney General Chambers and Ministry of Justice wishes to inform the general public that it uncovered new evidence in the course of the proceeding that suggest that the persons that were charged in the case were not linked to the commission of the offense. Therefore the ministry deemed it appropriate under the circumstances to suspend this case through the filing of a Nolle and redirect the office of the Inspector General of Police to carry out further investigation into the matter with a view to bring the actual culprits to justice,” the Attorney General’s Chambers and Ministry of Justice said in a statement.

The office reassures the public that it will defend the welfare and interest of victims in the fight against SGBV offences in the Gambia.

Until this development, Penny Appeal, its employees and other individual were charged with the offences of rape, operation a child centre without a permit and related offences contrary to the law of the land before the High Court of The Gambia
