The Gambia Immigration Department has intercepted 76 people suspected of attempting to migrate irregularly by sea, the department said.
The operation was carried out by the department’s Border Patrol Unit, stationed at the Migration Management Unit in Tanji, with support from Spanish partners.
Immigration officials said officers recovered a wooden boat, a tricycle, two boat engines, five 60-liter containers of fuel, and five 30-liter containers of fuel during the operation.
“A suspected migrant smuggler was also apprehended and is currently in GID custody, assisting officers with ongoing investigations,” the department said.
According to the GID, those intercepted included seven Gambians, 20 Senegalese, six Malians, and 43 Guineans. The group comprised 54 men, 14 women, and eight minors.
The department said the operation was part of its continuing efforts to combat irregular migration while protecting lives and strengthening border control, migration management, and national security.
