The Ministry of Youth and Sports approved D2.5 million to support The Gambia’s under-18 men’s and women’s beach volleyball teams in their participation at the 2026 FIVB U18 Beach Volleyball World Championships, which were held in The Hague, Netherlands, from July 8 to 12.
The funding was announced by the Minister of Information, Media, and Broadcasting Services, Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, who said the allocation was made to facilitate the teams’ participation in the international tournament.
“The Ministry of Youth and Sports approved 2.5 million Dalasi to support the participation of The Gambia’s under-18 male and female beach volleyball teams at the 2026 FIVB U18 Beach Volleyball Championships in the Netherlands,” Dr. Ceesay said.
The Gambian teams qualified for the world championships after winning the African Under-18 Beach Volleyball Championships, earning their place as the continent’s representatives.
The country’s delegation featured Abdallah Bah and Omar Bojang in the boys’ competition, while Fatou Bah and Mariam Sanyang competed in the girls’ division.
The teams were led by Head Coach Amadou Jarju, assisted by Lamin Suwareh and Alhagie Ceesay.
The tournament brought together many of the world’s leading under-18 beach volleyball players, providing The Gambia’s young athletes with an opportunity to compete on the sport’s biggest youth stage following their continental triumph.
