President Adama Barrow has appointed Major General Ousman Gomez as the Chief of Defence Staff of the Gambia Armed Forces, confirming him in the country’s highest military post as part of a broader reshuffle of the armed forces’ senior leadership.

The appointments, announced Monday in a statement from State House, took immediate effect. The presidency said the changes were made under the powers vested in the president by Section 190(1A) of the 1997 Constitution.

Major General Gomez, who had been serving as Acting Chief of Defence Staff, will now serve in the position on a substantive basis.

As part of the reorganization, Brigadier General Sait Njie, the former Commander of the Gambia National Army, has been appointed Deputy Chief of Defence Staff.

Brigadier General Yaya Drammeh, previously Commander of the Republican National Guards, has been named Commander of the Gambia National Army, while Colonel Alhagie Sanneh has been recalled from his diplomatic assignment as Defence Attaché at The Gambia Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York to assume command of the Republican National Guards.

The appointments reshape the top leadership of the Gambia Armed Forces, affecting its three most senior operational positions as well as the command of the Republican National Guards, the elite unit responsible for the protection of the president.
