President Adama Barrow has stated that criticism directed at him through television and social media has no impact on his leadership, as he called on Gambians to uphold peace and unity ahead of the December presidential election.
Describing 2026 as a “very difficult and sensitive year” for the country, President Barrow emphasized the importance of national cohesion during the electoral period.
“Sitting on television or social media criticizing President Barrow does not reduce anything from me,” he said. “If Gambians choose to vote for me, those critics will only continue talking without effect, because leadership is determined by the will of the people.”
The president made these remarks during the inauguration of the National Food and Drug Quality Control Laboratory, where he also urged citizens to prioritize unity, noting that The Gambia is their only homeland.
“We have no other country apart from The Gambia,” he said. “We must do everything possible to maintain peace, because without peace, we cannot move forward or achieve our aspirations.”
President Barrow reiterated that development remains his central focus, stressing that progress can only be achieved through collective effort. He called on citizens who share his vision to join him in advancing the country’s development agenda.
“It is because Gambians trust me that they have elected me to lead,” he said. “In any system, there is one leader. I am leading, and I invite all to join me so that together we can develop this country.”
He further noted that leadership cannot be imposed, as every citizen holds a single vote, and ultimate power rests with the people to decide who governs them.
“The power lies with the people,” he added. “Only Gambians can determine who leads them.”
