Former West Coast Region Chairman of the National People’s Party (NPP), Lamin Jatta—now a member of the National Democratic Party (NDP)—has called on Gambians to vote for new leadership in the 2026 presidential election, arguing that President Adama Barrow should step down after ten years in office.

In an interview with Kerr Fatou, Jatta emphasized that political transition should be achieved through the ballot box rather than street protests, urging citizens to use the upcoming election to usher in what he described as a “new chapter” for the country.

“The reason we should change the president is that when he rules for ten years, he should stop there. It is not that we hate him, but that is what should have happened,” he said.

He further encouraged voters to opt for change in the 2026 polls, stressing that peaceful democratic participation remains the most effective means of political transition.

“Gambians should make changes; there is no need to protest. On election day, let us show that ten years is enough and give our votes to someone else to begin a new chapter so that the country can have a new leader,” he added.

Jatta also addressed concerns regarding the registration process of the National Democratic Party, insisting that any delays would not prevent the party from participating in future elections.

“They can delay our registration, but they cannot deny us registration. They can also delay people, but they cannot stop them from contesting presidential elections. We know the reason behind this, and we have our plans,” he said.

He further disclosed plans for a large-scale political rally, noting that opposition figures are expected to participate.

“We will hold a big rally similar to what Bensouda did. We have discussed with him and asked him to come out so the public can see him. We will also come out, and other opposition political parties will join. We are ready,” he said.
