Dodou Jah, a member of the National People’s Party (NPP), former Deputy Spokesperson of the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC), and political commentator, has expressed skepticism over claims that the UNITE movement could become The Gambia’s largest political force by September.

Speaking in an interview with Kerr Fatou, Jah addressed recent statements by UNITE’s leadership asserting that the movement would attain the status of the country’s biggest political party within months—a claim reiterated during the party’s recent rally.

While acknowledging UNITE’s growing visibility and organizational momentum, Jah described the timeline as unrealistic, suggesting that such assertions are more strategic than factual.

“Knowing the realities, they can’t be, but that’s what they are pushing for, so it’s strategy,” he said.

Despite his reservations, Jah commended the movement for its rapid rise, noting its ability to build strong structures and attract significant public attention in a short period. He also praised the scale and organization of UNITE’s recent rally and congress.

“There are political parties that have emerged in this country for far too long; they have never had a Congress of that magnitude. Why UMC? Planning, strategy, commitment, confidence,” he stated.

Jah further highlighted UNITE’s grassroots visibility, observing that the movement appears more active on the ground compared to some established parties.

“I go to places and I see UNITE motorbikes; how about other parties? I don’t see any sign or symbol that would reflect that they are here, but for them there is visibility,” he noted.

He urged political actors not to dismiss the movement’s progress, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging competitors’ strengths.

“You don’t downplay people when they are doing well; accept that you can say they are good, but I am better, but accept that they are good,” he added.
