The Gambia Immigration Department (GID), in collaboration with the Gambia Navy Barra Seaport Base, has intercepted and rescued three migrant boats in Niumi Bakalarr that were attempting to undertake an irregular sea journey to Europe.

According to a GID press release, the operation was conducted despite the absence of prior intelligence from the State Intelligence Service (SIS). The joint team swiftly located the three vessels, two of which were carrying migrants preparing to depart.

“The joint operation swiftly led to the discovery of three boats, of which two were loaded with several irregular migrants. With support from the Gambia Navy, an immediate migrant recovery attempt was conducted, disembarking only the minors and women from the boats. The two boats, out of the three, were later sailed and escorted to Denton Bridge,” the release stated.

In total, 73 prospective migrants were rescued, comprising 41 males, 32 females, and 10 minors. Authorities also recovered two large wooden boats, a 40-horsepower engine, 123 gallons of fuel, nine fuel barrels, and two empty barrels.

All rescued individuals and confiscated materials were transported to the Tanji Migration Management Unit for standard processing and further investigation.

The GID expressed appreciation to both the Gambia Navy and the State Intelligence Service for their continued inter-agency collaboration. It also commended personnel involved in the operation for their professionalism and dedication, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding lives, protecting national borders, and promoting safe and regular migration pathways.
