Mama Kandeh, leader and secretary of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), has explained that his attendance at the recent GALA protest in Brufut, which centered on the case of Ousainou Bojang, was motivated by solidarity with young people rather than political interests. His remarks came in an interview with Eye Africa, following reactions from some protesters who reportedly rejected his presence.

Addressing claims that he faced humiliation during the protest, Kandeh emphasized that his actions were consistent with his longstanding commitment to civic engagement and not intended to win votes.

“What I did was not a new thing for me. I have been doing this, and I will continue to do so as long as the situation demands it. I did not go there because they would vote for me,” he said.

Kandeh further explained that his presence at the protest allowed him to gain firsthand insight into the concerns of Gambian youth.

“I went to the protest personally because I wanted to understand firsthand what is happening and what issues are affecting the youth. While some welcomed my presence, others were reluctant—not because of anything against me personally, but because they preferred not to see politicians there,” he stated.

He clarified that the reactions were not targeted at him specifically but reflected a broader skepticism toward politicians. “I am a politician. The resistance could have been directed at me or any other politician. Some appreciated me being there and were willing to listen, while others simply did not want politicians involved,” Kandeh noted.

Acknowledging the protesters’ sentiments, he said he did not take their reactions personally. “I did not see it as a negative response. I understand their frustration and did not feel bad about what occurred,” he added.
