The National Democratic Party (NDP) has criticized the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) over its ongoing registration process, accusing the electoral body of unfair treatment and presenting what it described as a “dramatic narrative” to the public.

In a press statement, the party disclosed that it had been invited to a meeting at the commission’s conference hall, where officials raised concerns regarding aspects of its registration application.

According to the NDP, the IEC cited issues relating to specific terminologies used in the party’s constitution, describing them as “Ghanaian terms” and deeming them unacceptable.

The party further stated that of the 11,796 voter cards it submitted as part of its application, 3,355 were rejected due to inconsistencies. The IEC subsequently requested that the party provide additional valid cards to address the shortfall.

The NDP expressed concern over what it characterized as the commission’s decision to publicly frame the matter in a way that portrays affected parties negatively, rather than addressing such issues through administrative engagement.

“The commission’s role is to uphold fairness, transparency, and equal treatment of all political actors, not to appear to downplay or discredit certain parties in a manner that may be perceived as favoring others,” the statement emphasized.

The party also questioned whether the ruling National People’s Party was subjected to a similar level of scrutiny during its own registration process, underscoring the importance of equal treatment under the law.

“Equal treatment under the law is a cornerstone of democracy, and consistency in regulatory standards is essential for public confidence,” the party said.

Reaffirming its commitment to due process, the party emphasized that it remains dedicated to operating within the legal framework of The Gambia and complying with all lawful requirements established by the Commission. However, it maintained that it reserves the right to demand transparency, fairness, and accountability in matters affecting its political participation.

The NDP concluded by calling on the IEC to engage all affected parties professionally and transparently, in line with democratic best practices and principles of natural justice.
