The Gambia Immigration Department said on Friday that it had completed a two-week intensive training program in document security and fraud detection, aimed at strengthening border control and improving officers’ ability to identify forged travel and identity documents.

The training, which ended on Thursday at Banjul International Airport, was conducted in partnership with the Ministry of Justice and Security of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and involved 30 immigration officers, according to a statement issued by the department.

Officials said the program was designed to enhance the operational capacity of frontline officers responsible for safeguarding national travel documents, a task increasingly viewed as central to border security and national integrity.

Mariama Nyang, the commissioner of immigration at Banjul International Airport, emphasized the importance of protecting official documents, describing it as a critical element of effective border management.

Olimatou Jammeh, the assistant director general of immigration, called the training a significant step in strengthening institutional capacity and professional competence within the department, noting that it also reflected deepening cooperation with international partners.

Linda Wiegel, a senior trainer with the Netherlands Marechaussee, said the successful completion of the program would substantially improve officers’ ability to detect document fraud. She praised participants for their commitment and cooperation throughout the training.

The immigration department said the initiative underscores its broader efforts to enhance operational effectiveness, improve staff expertise and reinforce bilateral partnerships in addressing cross-border security challenges.
