The Gambia Armed Forces, in partnership with the Islamic Military Counterterrorism Coalition Center, on Monday began a specialized Explosive Ordnance Disposal training program at the Armed Forces Training School in Fajara, a move aimed at strengthening the country’s capacity to respond to increasingly complex security threats.

The program focuses on the detection, handling and neutralization of explosive munitions, ranging from conventional bombs and land mines to improvised explosive devices often used by terrorist groups. Military officials said the training is intended to better equip Gambian forces to protect civilians, safeguard critical infrastructure and enhance national security.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Lt. Gen. Mamat O.A. Cham, the chief of defense staff, described the initiative as essential at a time when security challenges are increasingly transnational and unpredictable. He said The Gambia remained committed to its role as an active member of the coalition, adding that multilateral cooperation was vital to combating terrorism and violent extremism.

The secretary general of the coalition, Maj. Gen. Muhammed bin Saeed, said the launch of the program reflected a deepening partnership between The Gambia and Saudi Arabia, which leads and supports the coalition. He thanked Gambian authorities for their hospitality and praised the country’s engagement in international counterterrorism efforts.

Maj. Gen. bin Saeed also conveyed greetings and assurances of support from Saudi Arabia’s leadership, including Prince Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the minister of defense.

In a statement, the Gambia Armed Forces said the training is part of the coalition’s broader “Competence” initiative and follows an earlier counterterrorism program hosted in the country. Military officials described the effort as a strategic investment in professional capacity, aimed at ensuring the armed forces remain disciplined, responsive and capable of addressing both conventional and emerging security threats.
