The former National Assembly Member for Niamina East and a senior figure in the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), Hon. Omar Ceesay, has underscored the importance of opposition unity ahead of the 2026 presidential election, arguing that internal divisions—rather than the ruling party—pose the greatest threat to electoral success.
Ceesay dismissed the National People’s Party (NPP) as an insurmountable force, insisting that a united opposition could defeat the ruling party.
“The NPP is not a threat to our victory if unity is realized within the opposition. Quite literally, they could be contained and defeated by December,” he said.
In a statement posted on his Facebook page on Sunday, January 18, 2026, Ceesay cautioned that persistent internal conflicts among opposition parties could undermine any prospects of victory.
“The real threat lies in the internal conflicts within the opposition itself—essentially a war within a war, opposition versus opposition. This internal strife will continue to push us toward the edge,” he warned.
The former lawmaker stressed that peace, unity, and strategic cooperation are indispensable if the opposition hopes to unseat the ruling party.
“Peace, unity, strategic cooperation, and the possibility of defeating the ruling party cannot exist while we are preoccupied with fighting amongst ourselves, which, of course, the NPP political elites are strategically amplifying, often without our notice, to undermine us and gain more advantages,” he emphasized.
Ceesay further highlighted the necessity of forming political partnerships, describing unity as critical to long-term political survival.
“Coming together as a unified force with a common goal, principles, and shared values is not a sign of ideological weakness; it is, in fact, essential for strategic survival. Forming political partnerships should not be seen as a weakness but rather as a symbol of strength, unity, and peaceful coexistence.”
He concluded by reaffirming his belief that political partnerships offer a realistic pathway toward national progress.
“I am not speaking out of illusion or desperation. Political partnership is a viable path forward for securing a better future for the greater good,” Ceesay noted. “The bottom line is that we must either collectively triumph over the NPP or risk being defeated individually, as parties or movements,” he added.
