The administrative secretary of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), Ebrima Nyang, has expressed confidence that his party is well positioned to win the 2026 presidential election, citing its electoral track record, expanding support base, and sustained grassroots engagement across the country.

Speaking in an interview with West Coast Radio, Nyang said the GDC believes it has steadily strengthened its political standing over successive elections.

“We believe that the GDC is in a better position to win the 2026 elections,” he said. “They are very desperate, because looking at the situation in this country, most of them have regretted the decision that they made in 2021,”

He attributed the party’s confidence to its performance in previous presidential polls, noting that the GDC secured about 89,000 votes in the 2016 election and increased that tally to more than 112,000 votes in 2021.

“Looking at our previous records from the 2016 election, where we had about 89,000 votes, and in 2021, where we had 112,000 plus, we believe our role heading into 2026 is very strategic,” he said.

Nyang described the GDC as a key political force alongside the National People’s Party (NPP) and the United Democratic Party (UDP), adding that the party’s decisions ahead of the 2026 polls could significantly shape the country’s political landscape.

“We believe that GDC decisions will reshape the political arena in this country,” he said.

He further highlighted the party’s ongoing outreach efforts, noting that GDC officials regularly engage citizens through house-to-house visits, public rallies, and community meetings to present and promote the party’s manifesto. “We are always going out to engage Gambian citizens either through house-to-house visits, open rallies, or meetings, so that our manifesto can be sold to the Gambian people,” he said.

Nyang also claimed that the GDC continues to attract supporters from the ruling NPP, asserting that many voters who supported President Adama Barrow in the 2021 election now regret that decision.

“In our recent engagement with supporters, we have seen more than 333 people leave the NPP for the GDC and the same trend is continuing,” he said.

Emphasizing the party’s role as an opposition force, Nyang said the GDC remains committed to contributing to meaningful political change in The Gambia.“As an opposition party we believe we have a big role to play to make sure that the change Gambians want in 2026 is achieved,” He Said.
