The flag bearer of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Ousainu Darboe, has underscored the importance of discipline as a critical factor in achieving electoral success during the party’s management retreat held on Sunday.

Addressing party members, Darboe said unity without discipline is fragile, stressing that discipline should not be viewed as punishment but as a necessary sacrifice for victory. He called for discipline in national conduct, public messaging, and in how party members engage both the public and one another.

“As we look ahead, we must be honest with ourselves. Personal victories alone are not enough. Winning in 2026 will require discipline, consistency, and execution,” he said.

Darboe cautioned members against actions or statements that could distract from the party’s mission or erode public confidence. He noted that internal disagreements, where they exist, should be addressed through established party structures with maturity and mutual respect.

“Internal disagreements, where they exist, must be handled through party structures with maturity and respect. Unity is not the absence of a debate. It is the ability to move forward together while decisions are taken.”

He further emphasised that every party structure must clearly understand its role in voter engagement, grassroots mobilisation, and in safeguarding the credibility of the UDP’s message.

Darboe concluded by acknowledging that the task ahead is demanding but achievable, expressing confidence that with mutual respect and an unwavering commitment to the people of The Gambia, the UDP can once again rise to the responsibility of national leadership.
