The Gambia and China Sign 100 Million Yuan Grant to Bolster Bilateral Cooperation

The Government of The Gambia and the People’s Republic of China on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, signed a grant agreement worth 100 million Chinese yuan, aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two nations.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad described the agreement as a reaffirmation of the longstanding friendship and collaborative partnership between The Gambia and China.
“The grant assistance is intended to support small but smart projects aligned with The Gambia’s national development priorities and will contribute meaningfully to socio-economic development and the well-being of the Gambian people,” the ministry said in a statement.
At the signing ceremony, Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sering Modou Njie, expressed gratitude to the Government and people of China for their enduring solidarity and support. He emphasized that the grant reflects China’s commitment to practical, results-oriented cooperation, particularly in sectors that enhance livelihoods and promote sustainable development.
Minister Njie highlighted China’s role as a long-standing development partner, noting collaboration across infrastructure, health, agriculture, capacity building, and humanitarian assistance.
“The signing of this agreement is in line with the shared vision of both countries to deepen mutually beneficial cooperation based on mutual respect, trust, and common development goals,” he stated.
The minister also reaffirmed The Gambia’s commitment to the one-China principle, its opposition to separatism and external interference in China’s internal affairs, and its support for China’s efforts to safeguard sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national reunification.
China’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to The Gambia, H.E. Liu Jin, reaffirmed his country’s dedication to supporting The Gambia’s development agenda and strengthening bilateral ties. He underscored the significance of South-South cooperation and people-centered initiatives that deliver tangible benefits to communities.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the Government of The Gambia remains committed to ensuring the grant’s effective, transparent, and timely implementation to maximize its impact for the Gambian people.
