Seyfo (Chief) Modou Lamin Baldeh of Lower Fulladu West pledged on Monday to remain active in Gambian politics, emphasizing that his traditional leadership role is owed to the support of President Adama Barrow.
Speaking at a session of the president’s “Meet the People Tour” in Sare Ngai, Central River Region South, Seyfo Baldeh made it clear that he would continue participating in political affairs, even as some expect traditional leaders to remain neutral.
“I have this position because of you, Mr. President. If you were not to grant it, I would not hold it,” Seyfo Baldeh told President Barrow. “If the expectation is that a Seyfo must be apolitical, then perhaps I should be removed, because I will continue engaging in politics.”
Addressing the local community, he framed loyalty to the president in both civic and spiritual terms. “Lower Fulladu, Adama Barrow is ours. To go against a president is to go against Allah. When Allah gives you someone, to oppose them is an act of disbelief,” he said.
Seyfo Baldeh also urged Gambians to support national development regardless of electoral outcomes. “When elections pass, citizens must unite for the country’s development; no foreign nationality will do it for us,” he said.
Highlighting President Barrow’s achievements, Seyfo Baldeh cited expanded electricity access, borehole construction, and advancements in agriculture. He warned that critics who downplay these accomplishments often lack the vision or capacity to implement solutions themselves. “So they have to follow the person with the idea and the power. We are behind the president today, tomorrow, and forever,” he said.
The chief concluded with a call for recognition of the president’s efforts and a reminder of the importance of sustained support for leadership that delivers tangible results.
