The Gambia Police Force (GPF) on Sunday, March 8, 2026, announced that officers from its Anti-Crime Unit Sub-Base in Barra, North Bank Region, apprehended seven individuals during a targeted night patrol as part of ongoing intelligence-led efforts to combat irregular migration and related criminal activities.

In a statement, the police said the operation, led by RSM Corr, followed credible intelligence indicating that a group of individuals was hiding in a cashew farm in Bakalar and allegedly preparing to embark on an irregular migration journey.

“Upon arrival at the location, officers apprehended seven individuals, while several others managed to flee the scene. The suspects were escorted to the Anti-Crime Unit Sub-Base in Barra for screening and verification,” the statement said.

Preliminary screening, according to the police, indicates that those arrested include nationals from Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, and Sierra Leone.

The police added that the individuals remain in temporary custody pending their formal handover to the Gambia Immigration Department in Barra for appropriate administrative action in accordance with immigration laws.

The GPF further noted that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend individuals suspected of facilitating or organizing irregular migration activities.

“The operation reflects the Gambia Police Force’s continued strategy to disrupt irregular migration networks, strengthen border security, and protect vulnerable individuals from undertaking dangerous and life-threatening journeys,” the statement added.

The police also commended communities across the North Bank Region for their continued cooperation and urged members of the public to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
