President Adama Barrow on Friday met with the chairpersons and executive directors of several national education boards to review progress and outline priorities for higher education financing and research, according to a statement from State House.
The discussion focused on three initiatives: the Students Revolving Loan Scheme, which is intended to expand access to tertiary education through student financing; the Tertiary and Higher Education Trust Fund, aimed at mobilizing resources for infrastructure and broader access; and the National Research and Innovation Fund, designed to support research and raise The Gambia’s profile in global innovation.
“Tertiary and Higher Education Trust Fund (THETF), focusing on mobilizing resources for infrastructure and access, and the National Research and Innovation Fund (NRIF) that will empower researchers and boost The Gambia’s global standing in innovation,” the statement reads.
Professor Ahmed Adamu, vice chancellor of the University of Education, briefed Mr. Barrow on what he described as ongoing reforms and targeted outcomes aligned with the government’s Education Development and Transformation Agenda, the statement said.
Members of the boards overseeing the three programs thanked the president for their appointments and pledged to advance the government’s development objectives. They also reported that institutional frameworks were being put in place to support the implementation of the education agenda.
The meeting underscored the administration’s emphasis on strengthening higher education and research as part of its broader development strategy.
