Saikou Sawo, the presidential flagbearer of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), has urged political parties in The Gambia to entrust leadership roles to younger members, arguing that generational renewal is key to preventing internal fragmentation and strengthening party unity.
Speaking in an interview with West Coast Radio, Sawo said the PPP has deliberately created space for young Gambians to assume leadership positions, a practice he believes is lacking in several other political parties.
“You don’t see that in other parties. It’s like you have the same figure being the head for decades,” he said. “Generation change, people are evolving, and I think that would help with the proliferation that we see today with too many political parties.”
According to Sawo, allowing younger leaders to emerge brings fresh perspectives and ideas that are better aligned with contemporary realities.
“I think sometimes, giving the next person a chance, the opportunity, the new generation comes with a fresher mindset, different perspective, and they could relate more to that specific time frame,” he said.
He warned that parties that concentrate leadership in the hands of the same individuals for extended periods risk division and loss of focus. “If other parties embrace that framework, you will see fewer parties in the Gambia,” he said.
Sawo further noted that the PPP’s inclusive approach has contributed to an increase in membership, including the defection of members from other political groups such as the Golden Era Party.
“They’re giving opportunities for young Gambians to come and also lead within the party. Because you don’t see that in other parties,” he said.He emphasized that promoting youth leadership is not merely about transferring power, but about ensuring political parties remain relevant, cohesive, and responsive to the aspirations of Gambians.
