Lamin J. Darboe, the presidential flag-bearer of the National Unity Party (NUP), has called on undecided voters to focus on the qualities of individual candidates rather than party affiliation in the December 5 presidential election.

Speaking during an appearance on Coffee Time with Peter Gomez, Darboe emphasized that governance ultimately rests with the president, not political parties. He urged voters to choose a leader with a strong understanding of governance, the ability to work collaboratively with other arms of government, and a proven track record of public service.

“The president must be able to understand the pillars of government. You let the National Assembly and Judiciary do what is required of them within the boundaries of the law,” Darboe said.

Responding to questions about why Gambians should entrust him with the presidency in 2026, Darboe pointed to his longstanding engagement in national discourse. He said his selection as NUP’s flag-bearer was based on his record and experience, adding that he has been actively critiquing successive governments since 1992.

Darboe also expressed concern about what he described as declining standards in public institutions, attributing these challenges to weak governance.

“In this country, everything deteriorates. Employees steal from their employers and things like that. But it is all because you are not governing your institutions properly,” he said.

He concluded by underscoring the need for humility and accountability in public office.

“The presidency is just a borrowed cloth. At some point, you have to let it go,” Darboe said, urging leaders to govern with dignity and respect for the people.
