The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE) has announced a ban on graduation ceremonies for nursery and lower basic schools, while restricting upper basic and senior secondary school events to speeches and prize-giving ceremonies only. The move aims to minimize financial strain on parents and guardians.

Under the new guidelines, students are required to wear their regular school uniforms during these ceremonies, as the use of gowns or formal attire will no longer be permitted. The directives apply to both public and private schools across The Gambia, effective immediately from 31st March 2026.

In a press statement, the ministry expressed concern over the rising cost of graduation events, noting that extravagant ceremonies impose undue financial pressure on families and contravene the government’s “No Levy” policy.

The ministry emphasized that all events must take place on school grounds to avoid additional expenses associated with hiring external venues. Schools are also prohibited from organizing parties or social gatherings following the ceremonies, and students cannot be compelled to participate in such events.

MoBSE urged all schools to adhere strictly to the new regulations to ensure that student achievements are recognized in a dignified and inclusive manner, without excluding those unable to meet the financial demands of elaborate celebrations.

“The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education appreciates your cooperation in implementing these directives,” the release concluded.
