The Minister of Environment, Climate Change, and Natural Resources, Rohey John Manjang, has urged residents of Old Yundum to be mindful of opposition parties, citing concerns about leadership and governance.

She made these remarks during a National People’s Party (NPP) community engagement held in Old Yundum, where she highlighted what she described as the achievements of President Adama Barrow’s administration, including development initiatives, peace, democratic freedoms, and the empowerment of women and youth.

Minister Manjang cautioned the community against entrusting national leadership to individuals she claimed resort to involving the police over minor disagreements.

“We have seen people who take others to the police over small misunderstandings. Imagine what would happen if such people were given control of the government,” she said.

She further referred to findings from the Local Government Commission of Inquiry, arguing that instances of mismanagement and destruction uncovered during the inquiry demonstrate the risks of handing over greater responsibilities to such individuals.

“If there was mismanagement in handling small positions, then giving them to the government would be a disaster. We must be mindful,” she added.

Minister Manjang concluded by stressing that while democracy and peace are valuable, their sustainability depends on the collective responsibility of Gambians.

“Democracy and peace are enjoyable, but it is up to us to keep them alive,” she said.
