Manjai Forex Bureau Attack Suspect Remanded as Case Moves to High Court

62

The Kanifing Magistrates’ Court has ordered the remand of Basirou Sarr, who is accused of attempting a violent robbery at a forex bureau in Manjai Kunda.

Sarr appeared before Magistrate Conteh following the alleged incident on 10 February 2026. Prosecutors told the court that Sarr used violence in an attempt to rob Halimatou Barry, a staff member of AMM Forex Bureau.

During the proceedings, Police Prosecutor S. Manjang, a Cadet Inspector, applied for the matter to be transferred to the High Court of The Gambia, arguing that the Magistrates’ Court lacks jurisdiction to try capital offences.

“Your Worship, the Magistrates’ Court does not have the jurisdiction to try capital offences that carry penalties of life imprisonment or death,” Inspector Manjang submitted.

He relied on Section 72(1) of the Criminal Procedure Act 2025, requesting that the case be referred to the Special Criminal Division of the High Court for a full hearing and determination.

Sarr is charged with attempted robbery with violence, contrary to Section 249(2)(a)(c) of the Criminal Offences Act 2025. The prosecution alleges that on 10 February 2026, in Manjai Kunda, he attempted—using violence—to rob Halimatou Barry while she was on duty at AMM Forex Bureau.

In her ruling, Magistrate Conteh granted the prosecution’s application and, invoking Section 228 of the Criminal Procedure Act 2025, ordered that Sarr be remanded at Mile 2 Central Prison.

“The accused shall remain in custody pending a hearing date at the High Court,” Magistrate Conteh ruled.
