Alhaji Mamadi Kurang, a former presidential aspirant and now a member of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has asserted that President Adama Barrow’s popularity is steadily declining, a development he believes positions the UDP as the leading contender ahead of the December 2026 presidential election.

Speaking in an interview with Kerr Fatou, Kurang expressed confidence that the UDP will emerge victorious in the upcoming polls, arguing that President Barrow’s support base has significantly weakened.

“I think the statistics are showing without any reasonable doubt that the popularity of Barrow is taking a nosedive, is collapsing from 50-something percent, he is now able to be voted by only 30 to 34 percent,” He Said.

According to Kurang, several factors have contributed to the decline in President Barrow’s popularity, including allegations of corruption, poor economic management, and growing public opposition to the prospect of a third presidential term.

“From now to the next nine months all the factors you see are against him. Corruption against Barrow, Management of the economy is against Barrow, Third term, the people don’t want a third term is against Barrow, institutional reform is against him,” He Said.

Kurang also dismissed claims that politicians who have defected to the National People’s Party (NPP) have boosted President Barrow’s electoral chances. He described the cross-carpeting to the ruling party as ineffective, while maintaining that defections to the UDP reflect genuine public support.

“All indications are that UDP’s popularity is going up so who is likely to win if Barrow doesn’t win? It is obvious the United Democratic Party,” He Said.

He further emphasized the party’s consistency in political outreach and campaigning over recent years.

“The UDP has been the most consistent party in terms of campaigning for the past couple of years. The UDP is going to win the election in December 2026,” He Said.
