The National Assembly Member for Bundungka Kunda, Sulayman Jammeh, said on Monday that he would not campaign for the position of mayor, arguing that public office should be determined by the wishes of voters rather than personal ambition.
In an interview with Star TV, Mr. Jammeh said he would leave any decision about a future mayoral bid to the people, noting that his political career has been shaped by public support rather than self-promotion.
“These are the people’s positions,” he said. “So I will leave it to the people. I will never try to force myself on it.”
Mr. Jammeh said his focus remains on carrying out his current responsibilities as a member of the National Assembly, adding that elected officials should concentrate on serving their constituents instead of pursuing future political office.
He said that when leaders prioritize service, communities are more likely to receive the development they need.
The lawmaker also rejected what he described as the politics of grand promises, saying his priority is delivering measurable improvements for residents, including expanding access to essential services such as clean water.
Mr. Jammeh argued that meaningful development depends on cooperation across local government, saying that with the support of all 19 councilors, more progress could be achieved across every ward and that such collaboration would allow him to extend his impact beyond Bundungka Kunda.
He said effective public service must be grounded in integrity and a genuine commitment to the public good.
“If you are serving people, you must have good intentions,” Mr. Jammeh said. “And I believe that if you have good intentions, God helps you. That is the direction we are working towards.”
