GFD Launches Initiative to Expand Inclusion for Children With Disabilities

The Gambia Federation of the Disabled on Wednesday unveiled a new initiative aimed at advancing inclusion and equity for children with disabilities through education, technology, and play.
The project, supported by the European Union, Catholic Relief Services, and the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, is built around the theme “Empowering Children with Disabilities through Education, Technology, and Play.” Organizers say the effort seeks to reshape perceptions of disability by fostering awareness, empathy, and active participation among young people.
The program’s first phase, titled “Sensitization of Girls and Boys Drama and Environmental Club Members,” will be introduced in selected schools nationwide. It is being implemented in partnership with the National Organization of the Disabled, Special Olympics Gambia, and the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, alongside European Union and Catholic Relief Services support.
At the launch, the federation’s chairperson, Muhammed Krubally, described sensitization as a critical tool for cultivating inclusive mindsets among schoolchildren.
“When children learn to see ability rather than disability, they become ambassadors of change in their communities,” Mr. Krubally said.
He added that integrating technology, creative arts, and sports into the initiative would not only improve accessibility but also help nurture confidence and leadership among children with disabilities.
Mr. Krubally called for broader societal commitment to inclusion, arguing that empowering children with disabilities is essential to building a more equitable nation.
The project will rely on drama, environmental clubs, and interactive learning platforms to address stigma and dismantle barriers that limit opportunities for children with disabilities.
