GDC’s Nyang Raises Concerns Over Disunity Among Groups Advocating Opposition Unity

Ebrima Nyang, the Administrative Secretary of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), has expressed concern over the lack of unity among various groups calling for a coalition of opposition parties ahead of the December 5 presidential election.

Nyang noted that multiple groups are making similar appeals for opposition unity, a situation he described as troubling. He argued that groups advocating the same objective should first demonstrate unity among themselves before urging political parties to form a coalition.

“There are many groups that have made similar calls, which is becoming a growing concern for us. If groups that want the same unity from the oppositions cannot come together under one banner, then they lack the moral ground to call for an opposition coalition,” he said.

He cited organizations such as the Apex, the Coalition for System Change, and the People’s Alliance for Change, all of which are calling for opposition unity. According to Nyang, the existence of multiple, separate initiatives creates confusion over which call should be heeded.

Nyang questioned why these groups have found it difficult to first unite among themselves and present a single, coordinated approach to opposition parties. He added that failure to do so raises doubts about their ability to effectively bring the opposition together.
“This is not a win situation for any of these bodies, but it should be a win for you by coming together and a win for the opposition to form a coalition to deliver a victory for The Gambia and Gambians in the December polls,” he stated.

He urged the groups to begin the process of unity among themselves, arguing that such an example would encourage opposition parties to follow suit. Nyang acknowledged that a united opposition coalition stands a stronger chance of defeating President Adama Barrow in the December election.

“Which makes it very important to have a credible coalition that can usher in a new direction in meeting the needs and aspirations of our people,” he added.
