The Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) on Sunday welcomed 112 new members who reportedly defected from the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) in Manjai Kunda, Kanifing Municipality, as political activities intensify ahead of the 2026 elections.
The new members comprise 77 women and 35 youths, who said they were disillusioned with the Barrow-led government and had decided to join the GDC in search of meaningful change.
Speaking at the event, GDC Administrative Secretary Ebrima Nyang described the development as a strong indication of growing public support for the party, noting an increase in defections from the NPP in recent weeks.
“We are very pleased to see that over the past month there has been intense cross-carpeting from the NPP to the GDC,” Nyang said, adding that many Gambians are now seeking credible political alternatives that can genuinely address their concerns.
He emphasised that the GDC places particular focus on women and youth empowerment, stressing that the party provides an inclusive platform where their voices are heard and their issues addressed.
“With the welcoming of 112 people from the NPP, we believe this trend will continue. It clearly shows how desperate people are for change,” he said.
Nyang further urged women and young people to reject what he described as exploitative political practices that offer little impact on their development.
“The time has come for women and youth to put an end to being used as political tools with zero impact on their development,” he added.
He said the party continues to gain momentum nationwide and expressed confidence that the growing defections would strengthen the GDC’s position ahead of the 2026 polls.
“With the cross-carpeting from the NPP, this puts us in a better position to defeat President Barrow in 2026,” Nyang stated.
He concluded by thanking the Manjai community for their support and assured residents that the GDC would deliver tangible results if given the mandate to govern.
“We thank the entire Manjai community for entrusting us with their support, and we will deliver when Gambians give us the opportunity to lead this country in 2026,” he said.
