The founder leader of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) has been reelected for another term as the leader and secretary general of the party.
At the party’s congress in Basse, Mama Kandeh has secured his second mandate to lead the party since its formation in 2016.
Kandeh went unchallenged for the secretary general position. Meanwhile, the party also elected one Fanta Bojang, a native of Brikama, as the deputy party leader.
Bojang replaced Yusupha Jaited, the former deputy leader of the party who resigned reportedly after a fallout with Kandeh.
The congress also elected Demba Sabally as the first national chairman. The admin secretary elected was Samba Baldeh.
Mamba Njie, a former permanent secretary at the Ministry of Youths and Sports, was elected as the party’s spokesperson.
In his acceptance speech, the GDC leader criticized the Government for inefficient management of public funds, citing public sector corruption as one of the obstacles to the country’s development.
The GDC leader also called for tolerance in the political space while urging people to unite for a common national agenda. Kandeh praised the success of the GDC as country’s “biggest opposition grouping” with its two-year span.
Gambian political parties are on a last minute race to hold an elective congress as required by law.
The Independent Electoral Commission has announced it will deregistered any party that does not hold congress before end of December.
The National Reconciliation Party, the Peoples Progressive Party and the People’s Democratic Organization for Independence and Socialism are all holding their elective congress this weekend.
