The Alternative Dispute Resolution Secretariat, a government body tasked with mediating disputes and promoting reconciliation in The Gambia, has been nominated for the 2026 Peace Maker Award by the Center for African Peace & Conflict Resolution at California State University, Sacramento.

The nomination recognizes what organizers described as the secretariat’s “outstanding service in providing mediation and other conflict resolution services in The Gambia,” according to Adama Sanneh, communications officer at the Alternative Dispute Resolution Secretariat.

The Peace Maker Award is presented annually by the center to individuals and institutions whose work has advanced peacebuilding and conflict resolution across Africa and within African diaspora communities. Past honorees have included civic leaders, scholars, and grassroots organizations engaged in mediation, restorative justice, and violence prevention initiatives.

The award ceremony is scheduled for April 25, 2026, at the Alumni Center on the Sacramento campus, concluding the 34th Annual Africa/Diaspora Conference on Violence Prevention and Peace Education. Organizers expect approximately 300 participants from the United States, Africa, and Europe to attend the event.

For the Gambian secretariat, the nomination places its work in community-based mediation and alternative dispute resolution on an international stage, underscoring the growing recognition of locally rooted peacebuilding efforts in West Africa.
