The Gambia Navy has intercepted a boat transporting suspected irregular migrants in the Bunyado coastal area as part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal migration.

According to a statement issued on Sunday, January 4, 2026, and published on the official Facebook page of the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF), the interception was carried out by the Navy’s Riverine Coastal Detachment during routine patrols in the creeks of the Bunyado coastline.

“The Gambia Navy’s Riverine Coastal Detachment team this morning intercepted a local canoe carrying would-be migrants in the creeks along the Bunyado coastal area,” the statement said.

The GAF noted that the Navy has intensified its littoral patrols along the entire stretch of the River Gambia estuary in response to growing concerns over irregular migration.

“The Gambia Navy continues to intensify its littoral patrol reach along the entire stretch of the estuary of the River Gambia,” the statement added.

The Armed Forces emphasized that the operation forms part of broader efforts to discourage young people from undertaking the dangerous irregular migration route, commonly known as the “backway.”

“This is aimed at curbing the menace of the perilous backway journey among the youths of this country,” the statement concluded.
