Gambia elected to AU Peace and Security Council (PSC)  


BANJUL, 10 February 2022: 

The Government of The Gambia wishes to inform the general public that The Gambia has been elected as a member of the African Union Peace and Security Council (PSC) for the term 2022-2024. The Gambia is among the three countries (Republics of Senegal, Ghana and the Federal Republic of Nigeria) representing the West African Region in the Council. According to Article 6 of the Protocol Relating to the Establishment of the PSC, the Council is charged with the mandate to deploy the requisite security and political initiatives aimed at the furtherance of the peace and security agenda of the continent. 

The Gambia garnered the votes of 45 of the 48 Member States that were eligible to vote during the elections conducted by the 40th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union held from 2nd to 3rd February 2022 at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. The result was confirmed by the 35th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union also held at the African Union Headquarters from 5th to 6th February 2022. This development validates the momentous gains being made in the aspects of democratic governance, respect for human rights, peace and security since the inception of the new dispensation under the leadership of H.E. Adama Barrow, President of The Gambia. 

In the PSC, The Gambia will champion the consolidation of democratic governance, respect for human rights, transitional justice, post-conflict reconstruction and development, strengthening of regional and continental early warning mechanisms and the protection of children affected by armed conflicts.
