Essa Mbye Faal, leader of the APP-Sobeyaa political party, has sharply criticised President Adama Barrow for taking on loans to finance road construction, warning that ordinary Gambians will ultimately shoulder the financial burden.

“You, the ordinary Gambians, such as market vendors and shop owners paying taxes, will be the ones to bear the cost of repaying these loans,” Faal told a group of women who visited him this week. “Not a butut of the president’s money will go toward repayment.”

Faal said the government’s borrowing has contributed to the ongoing depreciation of the Gambian Dalasi and has deepened economic hardship for many citizens. He accused President Barrow of prioritizing appearances over the welfare of the people.

“He is misleading you,” Faal said, referring to the president’s recent claims that hospitals in The Gambia meet international standards. “He brought those hospitals for you because he does not value you. Neither he nor his family uses them for treatment.” He cited overcrowding in hospitals, including women sleeping on floors, shared beds, and infants sharing incubators, as evidence of persistent deficiencies in the health system.
