Lawyer and former TRRC Lead Counsel, Essa Mbye Faal, has issued a public apology following criticism over comments he made regarding the University of The Gambia (UTG) certificate and the English proficiency of its graduates.
The apology came after an online backlash from the public, especially from Faal’s remarks, which circulated widely on social media, drew strong backlash from UTG students and alumni. In a video clip, he was heard saying: “We have a university; the certificate it issues has value only in the Gambia. If you go to England, the standard is so low. You produce a graduate who cannot speak or write good English, which is very sad.”
In response to the outcry, Faal clarified that his comments were not intended to disparage the university or its graduates but to highlight the need for reforms in the country’s education system.
“As I reflect on this situation, I want to reaffirm my deep respect for every Gambian and the unique contributions they bring to our nation. I do not support elitism; rather, I believe in fostering a society where merit prevails, regardless of one’s background,” he stated.
Faal emphasized that education is central to national development and reiterated his commitment to advocating for policies that strengthen the sector. He added that his intention has always been to empower young people, who he described as “the future of the nation.”
“I appreciate the constructive feedback I have received and welcome further dialogue that can guide us toward a stronger, more resilient educational landscape.”
Faal concluded by stressing the importance of unity and mutual respect, noting that every Gambian should be valued for their capabilities and contributions.
