Independent presidential aspirant and former Vice President Dr. Isatou Touray has accused President Adama Barrow of exhibiting what she described as early warning signs of dictatorship, arguing that his administration has failed to deliver on its promises to Gambians and is seeking to prolong its hold on power.

Speaking in a recent interview, Dr. Touray said she believes the country is moving in the wrong direction under President Barrow’s leadership.

“A president who has failed the promises, a president who wants to self-perpetuate, and a president who is trying to bring in the signs and symptoms of early warning signs of dictatorship,” she said.

Dr. Touray stressed that her decision to contest the 2026 presidential election is not driven by personal opposition to President Barrow but by a desire to offer Gambians an alternative vision for the country’s future.

She said her experience in public service, coupled with her commitment to national development, positions her to lead the country, adding that running as an independent candidate enables her to prioritize the interests of the nation above partisan politics.

“My decision to stand for president is not about opposing Barrow as a person. It is about offering Gambians a choice and presenting a vision for the next chapter of our nation’s development. Democracy is strongest when good people can respectfully disagree, compete on ideas, and allow the people to decide,” she said.

Dr. Touray also ruled out any future political alliance with President Barrow or the ruling National People’s Party (NPP). She said she had already contributed her support, ideas, and commitment to the coalition that brought President Barrow to power but was later asked to leave and has no intention of returning.

She maintained that her campaign is focused on presenting an independent alternative to Gambians ahead of the December 2026 presidential election.
