Banjul City Council (BCC) Deputy Mayor, Abdou Aziz Dabakh Gaye, has clarified that the fire outbreak that occurred on Thursday at the Banjul market affected only one shop, which is a privately owned property belonging to Modou Musa Njie.

“Within the market there are private properties, and this is different from the council’s market buildings,” he stated.

He said the incident happened in the evening and is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault.

The deputy mayor noted that thanks to the swift response of the fire service, the blaze was contained before it could spread, preventing any casualties. However, he confirmed that fabrics and other items inside the shop were completely destroyed.

He further assured that the council will work closely with the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) to assess the extent of the damage and determine the most suitable form of assistance. Despite the shop being privately owned and not part of BCC’s properties, he said the council feels obliged to intervene, as the incident occurred within Banjul.
