The mayor of Banjul, Rohey Malick Lowe, issued a stern warning Thursday to residents and visitors who dispose of waste illegally, pledging to enforce anti-littering laws and hold offenders accountable.

Speaking at a press conference, Mayor Lowe expressed frustration over persistent irresponsible waste disposal, which she said undermines the city council’s efforts to maintain public cleanliness. “People will accumulate excessive waste and wait until nighttime to throw it on the streets. This behavior must stop, as we will pursue legal action against anyone caught doing so,” she said.

Mayor Lowe called on law enforcement agencies, the judiciary, and the central government to assist the council in prosecuting violators, emphasizing that accountability is essential to deterring future offenses.

“We aspire to make Banjul the cleanest city, a place where everyone can take pride, just like in other cities,” she said, highlighting the recently launched Urban Youth-Led Cleaning Initiative, implemented by the Regional Female Leaders Association (REFELA), as an example of the council’s commitment to improving sanitation.

The crackdown on illegal dumping is part of broader efforts by the Banjul City Council to enhance public health, boost civic pride, and make the capital more attractive to residents and visitors alike.
