A member of the Banjul City Council has raised alarms over the council’s failure to hold regular meetings, warning that the lapse could constitute a breach of the Local Government Act.

Gallas Ceesay Jr., a nominated council member, said in a Facebook post that if the council did not convene a general meeting by February 10, 2026, it would mark the third consecutive month without such a session. He cited Section 28(1) of the Local Government Act, which requires that “a meeting of a council must be convened at least once a month by the chairperson.”

Mr. Ceesay also claimed to possess financial records that, if made public, could reveal irregularities involving council officials. “If I release 12 out of 80 financial documents, some young and old people parading the corridors of the council will be summoned to the Fraud Squad of the Gambia Police Force for questioning,” he wrote. “The people of Banjul will finally see how their money has been spent.”

He said his decision to speak out stems from a desire to shield residents from additional investigations. “The goal is to protect Banjullians from being dragged before another commission of inquiry. It’s embarrassing!” he added. The council has yet to respond to Mr. Ceesay’s allegations.
