President Adama Barrow over the weekend officially launched an electricity expansion project connecting 101 communities in the West Coast Region, as part of the government’s nationwide drive to achieve universal access to power.

The launch forms part of the President’s ongoing countrywide tour to inaugurate newly electrified communities. Speaking at the commissioning ceremony in Pirang, President Barrow said thousands of Gambian households are now benefiting from reliable and affordable electricity.

He described the milestone as more than an infrastructure achievement, noting that it represents dignity, economic empowerment, and social transformation for citizens.

“From now on, electricity will power more businesses, strengthen agricultural productivity, enhance healthcare delivery, improve educational outcomes, and uplift living standards throughout the country,” he said.

President Barrow emphasized that the progress reflects his administration’s firm commitment to achieving universal electricity access by the end of 2026—well ahead of the global 2030 target for affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.

He said The Gambia is demonstrating how strong political will, strategic planning, and effective partnerships can accelerate ambitious development goals.

The President further explained that the expansion is guided by the National Electricity Master Plan (2021–2040), which provides a long-term roadmap for building a resilient, sustainable, and diversified energy sector.

“Through this master plan, we are modernizing transmission and distribution networks, expanding renewable energy, and strengthening national energy security to support sustainable economic growth,” he said.

President Barrow reaffirmed his government’s commitment to mobilizing resources, strengthening institutional capacity, and fostering strategic partnerships to achieve 100 percent electricity access by 2026. He also expressed appreciation to development partners for their continued support and contributions to the sector.
