Omar Sanyang, Secretary General of Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA), has dismissed claims that the movement is advancing the interests of opposition political parties, insisting that its campaign is driven by a commitment to accountability and the interests of the Gambian people.

Speaking in an interview, Mr. Sanyang acknowledged the political nature of GALA’s activities but rejected suggestions that the movement was seeking to bolster the opposition ahead of the December 2026 presidential election.

“We are not furthering any cause of the opposition. We are furthering the cause of the Gambian people,” he said.

Mr. Sanyang maintained that GALA’s efforts to expose alleged government wrongdoing and demand accountability should not be misconstrued as an endorsement of any political party.

He said the movement would not abandon its advocacy simply because opposition parties might benefit politically from its activities or use its findings to strengthen their electoral campaigns.

According to him, any decision by opposition parties to capitalize on GALA’s campaign for electoral advantage would be entirely their responsibility and would not alter the movement’s objectives.

Mr. Sanyang further assured that GALA’s central committee would safeguard the organization’s independence and ensure that its activities do not translate into direct or indirect support for any political party.

He reiterated that the movement would continue to scrutinize government conduct and expose alleged wrongdoing, regardless of the political consequences.

He argued that if opposition parties gained political mileage from such revelations, the responsibility would rest with the government whose actions had prompted the criticism, rather than with GALA for bringing those matters to public attention.
