Fatou Kinteh, the Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Welfare, said women across The Gambia are prepared to mount a nationwide campaign aimed at securing 90 percent of the vote for President Adama Barrow in the December presidential election.
Kinteh made the remarks at a meeting in Njaba Kunda during President Barrow’s nationwide tour, where he has been laying foundation stones and inaugurating road and health projects.
Addressing the gathering, Kinteh said the Barrow administration had fulfilled key commitments to Gambians and predicted that voters would respond by supporting the president at the polls. She pointed to the large turnout of women at the meeting as evidence, she said, of their support for the government and its programs.
“We will do a house-to-house campaign for you for a victory that will surpass 2021’s,” Kinteh said. “We want you to win with 90 percent.”
Kinteh told the president that women were prepared to take a leading role in his re-election campaign and work to return him to State House for another term.
“President Barrow, the women asked me to tell you they are ready for this fight, they are ready for this election, and they will make sure you are returned to State House to continue your development trajectories,” she said.
The minister also said women from Barrow’s National People’s Party and its allied parties met last Friday and agreed to pay his nomination fee for the presidential election.
She said women had made a similar contribution ahead of the 2021 election and described the latest pledge as a demonstration of their continued political support for the president.
Barrow, who won re-election in 2021, is seeking another term in the December presidential election. Kinteh did not cite polling or other independent data to support her prediction that he could secure 90 percent of the vote.
