Hon. Sheriffo Sonko, Transport Councilor at the Brikama Area Council and a senior member of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has criticized President Adama Barrow for what he described as “contradictory” public statements, while also questioning the president’s independence in decision-making.

Sonko’s remarks follow recent comments by President Barrow dismissing UDP leader Ousainou Darboe’s one-term pledge as politically motivated, alongside his criticism of ongoing opposition coalition efforts.

In a statement shared with Kerr Fatou on Monday, Sonko said he had been unable to raise these concerns directly with the president due to pressing commitments in recent weeks.

“This situation further strengthens the perception many people already have that the president is no longer thinking independently,” Sonko stated.

He also challenged the president’s recent warning about prolonged stays in power, pointing to what he described as inconsistencies in Barrow’s own position on term limits.

“It is quite ironic that a president who has been in charge for nearly ten years and is still seeking another term is warning people about someone else potentially staying in power for too long if elected. What exactly qualifies as too long for someone who once publicly declared support for a two-term limit, yet later betrayed that very principle?” he said.

Sonko further criticized the president’s remarks dismissing coalition-building efforts by opposition parties, arguing that Barrow himself has relied on coalitions both to gain power and to secure re-election.

“Sir, you came to power through a coalition, and you sought reelection through another coalition as well. How can you publicly condemn coalitions when even, as an incumbent, you could not confidently face the polls without the support and backing of other political parties?” he questioned.

He urged political leaders to exercise greater caution in their public statements, suggesting that the president’s remarks may be influenced by those within his inner circle. “Leaders must think carefully before they speak. Although, to be honest, many people already believe that those surrounding you are the ones directing your words and decisions,” Sonko added.

Concluding his statement, Sonko emphasized the transient nature of political power and the enduring importance of a leader’s legacy.

“The people around you today may quickly disappear once you are no longer in office. The convoys will vanish. The interviews and public attention will fade away. Power is temporary. What will remain permanently is your record, the decisions you made, the principles you upheld or abandoned, and the legacy you leave behind while in office,” he said.
