President Adama Barrow, on Friday, February 13, 2026, inaugurated electricity in 53 villages across the Lower River Region (LRR), marking a significant milestone in his government’s nationwide electricity access initiative.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony in Sutukung, President Barrow highlighted the transformative impact of electricity on livelihoods, emphasizing the need for communities to safeguard the new infrastructure.
“For many years, we have lived without electricity. Now that it is available, we must embrace it, protect it, and ensure no one sabotages this progress,” he stated.
The President also called on residents to remain vigilant against cable theft, warning that such acts can cause significant setbacks and hardships. “We should all act as guardians to protect this resource for our collective benefit,” he urged.
President Barrow encouraged citizens to adopt a mindset of contribution, asking, “As a citizen, consider what you can do for your country, not what your country can do for you.”
Reassuring communities that are yet to receive electricity, he promised that the remaining villages would be connected before the end of 2026. Reflecting on initial skepticism surrounding his pledge to electrify the entire nation, he affirmed, “When I promised to electrify The Gambia, some doubted and accused me of politicking. Today, we are delivering on that promise.”
