UMC Offers Free Liquid Fertilizer to Women Gardeners, Citing Rising Costs

By Seedy Jobe
The Unite Movement for Change, a political movement awaiting a decision on its application with the Independent Electoral Commission, said this week that it had secured a limited supply of liquid fertilizer to be distributed free of charge to women horticulturalists nationwide, an initiative it says is intended to ease rising production costs and improve food output.
In a statement posted on his official Facebook page on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, Kemo Bojang, the movement’s spokesperson, said the initiative was designed to alleviate the financial pressure facing women gardeners as fertilizer prices continue to rise.
“These bottles will be distributed free of charge, in recognition of the heavy financial burden posed by conventional fertilizer, which now costs over D2,000 per bag, a cost many women gardeners simply cannot afford,” Mr. Bojang said.
According to the movement, the liquid urea fertilizer is highly efficient and capable of significantly improving yields across an entire hectare, making it particularly suitable for small-scale horticulture operations that dominate women-led gardening projects.
“Each bottle of liquid urea is highly efficient, with the capacity to significantly improve crop yields over an entire hectare,” Bojang added.
He said the distribution forms part of a broader commitment by the Unite Movement for Change to support women’s livelihoods and strengthen national food production at a time of economic strain.
“This initiative reflects our commitment to easing those hardships, strengthening food production, and supporting livelihoods,” Mr. Bojang said, adding that the movement’s goal is to reach as many gardens as possible through the targeted distribution.
