23

The Gambian leader Adama Barrow will be attending Nigeria’s Democracy Day celebration slated for June 12 in Abuja, stated a press release from the Presidency on Sunday.

The Gambian leader also congratulated Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhar on his re-election as President.

Buhari is the seventh (7) President to rule the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He was first elected in 2015 and re-elected in 2019 as candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) party.

Buhari was amongst the key players in negotiating a peaceful end to the political impasse in The Gambia after the 2016 Presidential Elections in which President Adama Barrow was democratically elected into office.

President Barrow has expressed commitment to work with President Buhari, in the promotion of peace, stability and regional integration.

Meanwhile, the Gambian leader has also extended felicitations to Dr. Mamadou Tangara, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad for his achievement as a recipient of the 2019 United Nation Population Award. The foreign gets the laureate in recognition of his commitment to peace and sustainable development.

The president has expressed pride that the UN has recognized Minister Tangara’s contribution in conflict prevention at a time when our country was at a decisive moment to either embrace democracy through a non-violent means or plunge into chaos.
