President Adama Barrow has granted presidential pardons to 56 male inmates at Mile 2 Central Prison, the country’s main correctional facility, the Gambia Prison Service announced on Wednesday.
The pardons were issued under the president’s constitutional prerogative of mercy, provided for in Section 82 of the 1997 Constitution.
In a statement, the Prison Service said the decision reflected Mr. Barrow’s commitment to justice and rehabilitation, describing the move as an opportunity for the released inmates to rebuild their lives and rejoin society.
During a release ceremony at the prison, the director general of the Gambia Prison Service thanked the president for what he called compassionate leadership and urged the former inmates to become positive examples in their communities. He said they had undergone significant personal transformation while incarcerated.
The director general also encouraged the men to demonstrate remorse through constructive action, respect the law, and contribute to national development.
“The Gambia Prison Service remains committed to rehabilitation, reform, and the successful reintegration of offenders into society as productive and responsible citizens,” the statement said.
