Talib Ahmed Bensouda, the mayor of Kanifing Municipality and a leading figure in the United Movement for Change, has called on young Gambians to register in large numbers as the country begins a supplementary voter registration exercise, describing the effort as pivotal to their future political participation.
“You are the vast majority of this country,” Mr. Bensouda said in a video posted on his official page. “Seventy percent of Gambians are youths. Those who are now of legal age, go get your voter’s card. This is about your future.”
His remarks come as the Independent Electoral Commission undertakes a 44-day registration drive scheduled to run through May 21, 2026. The exercise is intended to allow eligible citizens—particularly those who have recently turned 18—to be added to the national voters’ roll ahead of upcoming elections.
Mr. Bensouda also urged party agents and the broader public to closely monitor the process and flag any suspected cases of ineligible registration. He emphasized that formal challenges should be made during the post-registration review period, when revising courts are convened.
“We can challenge it legally and sanitize our voting list,” he said.
The call reflects heightened attention on the integrity of the voter roll as political activity begins to intensify in the lead-up to the elections.
