Talib Ahmed Bensouda, mayor of the Kanifing Municipal Council and co-founder of the Unite Movement for Change (UMC), said on Monday that his political movement is poised to dominate Gambian politics within six months.

Speaking at the UMC’s Fajara bureau, Bensouda described the party’s registration with the Independent Electoral Commission as a mere formality, drawing parallels to the political paths of Presidents Adama Barrow of The Gambia and Diomaye Faye of Senegal, both of whom won office as independent candidates.

“UMC’s ballot box will be part of the ballot boxes on December 5, and we will continue to contest in every National Assembly, Councillor, Mayoral, and Chairperson election,” he stated.

He characterized the UMC as “the party of the future,” adding that its mission to transform The Gambia begins immediately, spanning from national leadership contests to local elections.

“UMC is the party of the future; it will come to govern The Gambia. I am not saying this for political reasons,” Bensouda said. “I believe in it because of what I see and the support you have shown. There is truth, respect, and work—all motivated by love for our country.”

Bensouda emphasized that national development requires each generation to contribute in turn. He suggested that President Barrow, who initially pledged a three-year term but has been in office for a decade, should allow others the opportunity to lead.

The mayor also said that the UMC was founded on democratic principles, including respect for term limits, which he described as essential for a functioning democracy.
