The Leader of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), Mama Kandeh, has pledged that a GDC-led government would allocate D500 million to each region of the country to support women’s businesses and economic activities.

Speaking on the party’s development agenda, Kandeh said the funds would be channeled through the establishment of a Gambia Women’s Development Bank, with a strong focus on providing women access to affordable loans and financial support, regardless of the size of the region.

“When it comes to women, we will establish a Gambia Women’s Development Bank and ensure that funds are available in every region. No matter how small a region is, we will allocate five hundred million dalasis in each region to support our women,” he said.

He added that agriculture would be a major pillar of the GDC’s women empowerment strategy, emphasizing that investment in the sector is essential for wealth creation, food security, and sustainable livelihoods.

“We will empower women in agriculture because if you want to create wealth in The Gambia, you must invest in agriculture. It is a priority for GDC to invest in agriculture so that we can feed ourselves,” Kandeh stated.

The GDC leader also outlined plans to invest in the health sector, promising the construction of modern hospitals across all regions, equipped with adequate medicines and facilities to reduce the suffering of women and other citizens seeking medical care.

According to Kandeh, a GDC government would also focus on fighting corruption as a key strategy for mobilizing resources to finance national development.

“Some people ask how we will get the funds to make The Gambia a better place. Other developed countries were not built by angels or spirits; they were built by human beings through hard work. We will do the same, and we will fight corruption,” he said.
